Our story

Our Founder
Today, Eric Suriyasena is a legendary name in Sri Lanka and one who commands global respect. A renowned artist, entrepreneur, visionary and philanthropist, he pioneered batik art in Sri Lanka, counting 75 years as an artist, 60 years in the batik industry, and 55 years of dedication to Sri Lanka’s tourism sector.
The beginning of this remarkable journey which spans over seven decades, was sparked by the pioneering spirit of a humble youth whose dreams were fuelled by a passion to push his artistic talents beyond convention. Breaking new ground, he was among the first Sri Lankan artists to position the unique craft of batik as an art form in the 1960s, and he has continued to reshape the country’s art, culture and creative industries since then.
From a very young age, Eric was inspired by nature, people and colour, and having completed his education, he pursued his artistic interests at The School of Fine Arts and also explored photography under the mentorship of celebrated wildlife photographer Nihal Fernando. His early experiences abroad, studying in London, UK and travels in South East Asia exposed him to a broader spectrum of creative expression – he was especially drawn to the intricate batiks of Indonesia and Malaysia. Much inspired, he introduced batik to Sri Lanka in 1969 in an innovative way that combined technique and tradition with local motifs and materials to create a uniquely Sri Lankan art form. Reshaping the local industry and helping to establish batik as a vital Sri Lankan export at that time, he set a precedent that inspired the journey of many other batik artisans.
His passion as an artist has remained constant throughout the years, and his fame extends far beyond the shores of his homeland, exhibiting his art internationally, from very early on in Paris, London, Rome, and later in Japan and Germany. Combining art and artistry, he was one of the first Sri Lankan artists to elevate batik as an art form that befitted gallery walls, and over his long and illustrious career he has participated in nearly 100 exhibitions across 65 cities worldwide, bringing much renown to his motherland.

His entrepreneurial spirit extended beyond batiks and art to interests in Sri Lanka’s leisure sector – ventures that include Goldi Sands, Negombo; Suriya Resort, Waikkal and Club Kurumba, Negombo. His extensive support – of over half a century, contributing to the development of Sri Lanka’s tourism sector was recently honoured with a Tourism Legend award at the Sri Lanka Tourism Awards 2024.
With his trademark gentleness and tranquil demeanour masking a fiery determination to pursue his dreams and follow his life’s passion, Eric Suriyasena has influenced generations, and continues to do so today. His legacy lives on, not only in his exquisite artistic creations and his countless achievements, but also within those he inspires and motivates everyday.

Today, the batik workshop at Marawila has returned to smaller-scale artisan productions, with several stores featuring batiks and art located at Marawila and Negombo. The main gallery and head office were recently launched at Colombo 4, heralding a new era of success.
